Hi all,

Hope you all are doing good.

This is regarding the process of converting a car to English numbers.

As per the instructions give by RMV I collected two forms

1. CMT 130 - Application for the certificate of weight

2. CMT 72 - Change of licensing authority/change of other particulars

I was instructed to go to Werahera weighing center and weigh the vehicle first with CMT 130 and then produce the weight certificate and CMT 72 to RMV.

Can anybody help me with more details with the process such as

* Is that all or am I missing some steps/documents?

* Where is the weighing center in Werahera?

* Whats is the best time to go there/Is it crowded/opening times?

* Can I pay there to obtain the receipt to produce with CMT 130?

* Which counter should I approach in RMV?

* How long will it take for getting the plates?

* Where should I collect the plates?

I know there are few questions but I was thinking to make this as a complete guide for others who are looking for the same information.

Have a good day,

Thanks in advance,

Best Regards,

Dush

Just a small thought regarding this English number trend, again maybe old age and paranoia on my part, of course the owner is entitled to his/her wish, I personally feel it rather messes up the authenticity of the vehicle, it is after-all kind of weird to see an brand new plate with EA etc on a older gen car and pretty much every chap who sees the thing knows that there has been a number swap innit, would have added to the mystery if the number swap came into the same series as ongoing reg plates such as CAJ etc, but in this case its just branding them with English plates, even if the car is restored to spotless condition.

But this procedure is rather handy for fellas who got stuck with 13 totaling numbers of 80s and 90s which were sale nightmares, and the only car advices achchis nowadays give!

back in the day I used to run English no like look-alikes for neatness on my Land Rover but kept the 32-XXXX number for authenticity. Then again since Defenders never changed in appearance big time, it does not look that alien after all.

few other vehicles and also I have noticed this in preseas... there are 95 model preseas with G and sometimes J number plates, whereas there are preseas with the model year 2000, with 300- number plates... yes that's coz 2000 one's were brand new imported in 2000 hence got the old number whereas the 1995 one was used in jap and imported in 2003 or 2004... in that case, the 2000 made one falls under the old car category whilst the 95 falls under the new car category...so unless you are a presea person you wouldnt spot the difference by looking at the car...if you see a 300- car you know ah this is a 96, 97 model but actually its a 2000 model coz it was brand new imported.. so you can't really differentiate new cars with old cars via the number plate...

I'm going to presume you used random years the the example, but in reality even back in 2004 you couldnt import a car that was 9 years old; there's the exception of someone who may have used a blue-permit/gift-permit but it's quite unlikely that someone would waste the permit on a Presea.

And I'm with TIV on the out-of-the-norm number plates. The first thing that comes to mind when I see one on the road is "ohhh something illegal or dodgy must have happened with that car".. That being said, as a buyer I dont think it would discourage me from buying a car I like as long as everything's legit.

Dude, relax!

You don't need to go deep into the Sinharaja to find the hidden temple of RMV to submit the forms. I'm sure there's enough signs directing you and people you can ask once you get there :)

That's what I was also wondering when I saw this 95 old model presea registered in 2004 with JV number plates for sale... and for the second time few weeks back I saw a 1997 model one with J number plates once again registered in 2004.... why wouldn't someone want to buy a presea from their permit?.. I know there are many who hate the presea whilst another would love, but maybe both these guys must have been presea fans like me... back in the day there were many presea lovers like me... coz everytime i bump into a car on the road and ask the owner if he is selling it they are telling me "I imported this as a brand new car and using this for 14 years and I like this car so wont be selling this anytime soon"....

Contrary to belief, even self-proclaimed presea lovers after years/months/weeks wake up one morning and sell them in a heartbeat. So it's not impossible to find. And let's be realistic. An MP doesn't use his permit to buy a Maruti 800 right? Thats the same reason one wouldnt waste a blue permit on a Presea.

:)

Anyway, with the intention of not dragging another thread to the dump by splashing Presea all over it, let's drop this.

p.s: I'm not using green fonts for fun. If you'd observed, we have (or had) a practice of using green/blue for OT discussions on threads as to not loose focus on the main topic. In this case, the OP's issue of number-plate conversion (aka not-about-a-presea) .

very wrong statement... one would use their permit if he/she was a presea lover... I would! (Even if i was the richest guy in the country)...

Once I came across a Carina AT192 which had a JE- xxxx no plate. So I asked the owner how he got that number. He also said that it was imported for the blue permit.

seriously?!?!

I stand corrected then. I guess there's a CarinaLover out there too

:D Actually you're correct Watchman. And guess what, he is still having that carina and also bought a 260 allion which is also the successor of Carina.

Actually I've seen a Maruti and even a CherryQQ imported on permits. But this is probably because the owner couldn't afford anything else at the time. But these are in the minority.

But seriously PreseaLover, you need to get over your "love"/(feish) for your Presea.

People here love their cars, whether it be a fancy rare euro, a vintage/classic or even their own daily running cars. But I have never seen any petrol head who personifies a car to the extent as you!!!

There is a difference between a car and a woman bro. :P

@Watchman, the blue permit requires you to use the particular car for several years abroad. So the scenario would be, someone working abroad who would be using a regular car abroad would think, "If I can take this home with me without paying a huge duty, might as well do it".

A blue permit owner doesn't have the choice that any other permit owner would have.

Even I have given thought about it, but honestly I don't know how :(

It's been bothering me too, that I don't think of women, but about preseas all the time...

I just cannot stop thinking about the presea, I don't know why.. its just fascinates me than anything else, even than a woman... :/

Apart from what Hoonigan said....I know a couple of Corollas, Bluebirds and Sunnae (what is the plural of Sunny ?) that were brought down way back in the early 2000s under the gift permit scheme. With these permits the Sri Lankan working abroad could pick any car he/she wanted within the price/engine/age range (EDIT:as a gift to a blood relative). Also, the thresholds (eg. 2000cc for a diesel car, 1500cc for a petrol) that were stipulated by the permit were such that you really couldn't do much better than a Bluebird or a Carina.

Unfortunately I don't have blood relatives either... since the car is 15 or so years old, is this method still possible for old cars?

I mean anyone can buy a presea from abroad and send to SL now?
