Value for Money-A hybrid for less than 5M?

Prabath Chinthaka

Question

Dear Experts,

I am planning to buy a hybrid in about 3 months time. And thought of doing some information gathering which would help me select a vehicle for under 5 Million.

My main concern is value for money:

This is my scope:

1)Fuel economy

2)Should be able to carry atleast 5 passengers(including driver) cabin space when needed

3)Availability of parts and low maintenance cost

4)With good resale value

Lastly willing to settle for moderate comfort/safety and riding quality.

My two cents..

For 1-3 points Prius 2nd gen may be a good option. I think you can find around 3.6-3.8M range.

For the 4th point You will not loose that much as it has the toyota badge :)

HI,

PRABATH,

CAR BUDDY'S COMMENT WAS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT AS I AM HAVING MY PRIUS 2ND GEN 2007 SINCE 2016 AND UP TO NOW IT RIDES PERFECTLY AWESOME WITH HIGH FUEL EFFICIENCY.

ALSO IT HAS ALMOST NILL MAINTENANCE COSTS AND ALL THE HYBRID MECHANICS RECOMMEND THIS CAR THAN THE 3RD GEN PRIUS..

GO FOR IT AND YOU WILL LOVE IT...!!!

PERFECT HANDLING/STYLISH/PRESTIGE AS ITS STILL A TOYOTA HYBRID ALTHOUGH ITS BIT OLD!!!

Caps lock off please. Thank you.

Like others have mentioned I suppose a Prius would fit your bill.

When you buy a Hybrid in Sri Lanka (unregistered or registered) you need to accept the fact that there is a risk of your battery and other Hybrid components would go bad/deplete and that you will have to foot the bill for fixing it (I said unregistered as well because we get a lot of junk cars imported to SL). This has two impacts:

1. there is no such thing as called low maintenance because the cost will be relatively high in fixing it properly, thus putting maintenance cost in par with any other vehicle

2. People are aware of battery degration, etc...so your depreciation will be higher as people would want to buy the car for cheaper.

So when you consider the total ownership of the car..whatever money you save from fuel will be lost on repairs, and whatever you consider to be low cost maintenance (if at all possible) will be lost in terms of depreciation.

So should you buy a Hybrid ? If it makes sense to you..yes...especially if the car has been already fixed by a reputable place and well maintaine. Do some math and figure it out (how many kms you would run, for how long you would keep it, how much a potential battery replacement would cost and how much you would need to use that car to offset that cost, etc..). If it makes sense..then yes...buy one. If you find a good example that has been well taken care of and battery issues properly fixed..you will actually benefit from it.

It is a new betting and gambling platform where you can play without being afraid someone will try to steal from you. Find more on their website if you are interested.

I know what you are talking about. Many casinos on the internet are just trying to scam you. That is why if you don't want to lose money on anything, you should search for a good casino where you can be sure no one will try to scam you.
