L numbers came only with the single cab 110 and 130, thereby running the heavy vehicle rego, but most have now been converted to dual purpose after a body swap. The resale market is a bit low for the L plates

53 to 58 mostly were station wagons and some single cabs, also a few ex embassy

61 62 mostly single cabs as well running heavy vehicle rego
69 ex embassy

64 65 again a mixup of mostly station wagons and some canopy single cab 110s and 90s

32 again a mixup of 90s and 110a

if you have the chassis no, you can decode to what the car originally was

90 or 110, hard top, soft top, 110 90 or series etc

@tiv Solid run down ?

The 61- 62- heavy vehicles weren't necessarily single cabs - the County Station Wagon 110's  imported brand new by Colonial Motors were 10 seaters so those also ended up being registered as heavy vehicles but Motor Coaches

Bank of Ceylon owned a fleet - some on 56/7/8- more 61/2/4-

@nisala4423 just about every Defender you find now which isn't on a K plate or newer is likely a mix of parts - i don't personally know of any from the 1990's Defenders (bar one ;) ) still running the original engine an gearbox in the spec as assembled by Land Rover in Solihull in the UK.

@tiv there is a further complication on the chassis number - most of the police and army used one don't have the full alphanumeric chassis code but rather just a numeric one which is much shorter so it's virtually impossible to decode or find the original vehicle.

@nisala4423 check the seating capacity and weight on the CR - book - be careful / avoid if the book hasn't been updated as it technically is illegal to do what so many have done modifying these 90's / 110's and thus skirting taxes

Also note that anything pre-1990 isn't even technically a "Defender" but rather a 90"/110"

First of all, if u r buy a defender check the CR is a genuine one. they will offer u a CR but when u go to the RMV the CR lot number won't be even in the system. check a copy of the CR from RMV.

make sure the chassis number is where its supposed to be, and not tampered with, and check if there are obvious signs of the chassis portion where the number is etched is not cannibalized from another jeep. there are a lot out there in such conditions as well.

if the original vehicle is a cab or double cab type (soft top) and has been converted to hardtop (5door) the change of body type must be mentioned in the "4.   Conditions, Special notes" section of the CR. there are few which are being changed in the right manner and all taxes properly paid as well. i think its called body permit of something like that.

check "8.   Class of vehicle" dual-purpose/motor car or station wagon(not sure abt the last one though)

check "16.   Wheelbase" if its 90 or 110 this should be indicated there in centimeters. if prior to 1990 ish should be 89 or 109 non-defender models

check "22.   Seating capacity" this is another place where u can check what the vehicle class is

lastly "25.   length width height" especially check the length is as per the type of vehicle u gonna buy, short or long model.

this is what I know, in my own experience, if there's any shortcomings or anything to add, please do so.

genuinely hope that you will find a genuine defender.... seriously
