Ebay Good Or Bad?

damn, it hurts looking at all these new cameras...how quickly they come out with new models, and how quickly prices drop!! I bought a sony H5 about 9 months ago for around $400 and now they already have a H7 and H9 which you can get for a bit more than $400! 15x zoom would be nice, but the h5 is more than enough for normal use. definitely wouldn't make sense to go up from something like an s3 or sony h5 to a newer model...the next step up has got to be to a SLR...but that involves quite a large jump when it comes to $$$!

sony doesn't have the best reps in SL, definitely..so you might want to stay away from them in that regard, but at least with my H5 I've had a great time with it and its a really decent camera with a lot of great manual features. oh, and I bought my camera online too....ebay or anywhere else you just need to be careful whom you're buying from and make sure its someone with a good reputation. you can never be certain when buying online...things get lost/broken during shipping, and people make mistakes when packing orders too..but i think its a price worth paying given how good some deals can be on the internet!

Buying a brand new camera off ebay doesnt really make sense as you won't save much money and it's easier to purchase it direct from a reputed merchant online (vs from a seller on ebay).

As suggested you can check out epinions for reviews.

i have friends who got very good deals off ebay and the hardware also works without a hitch...

Ebay is superb when everything works out well... i've had very good deals and a couple of not so good ones..

but so far the good has outgunned the bad ones :)

U trust this site? They got both the optical zoom and the battery type wrong.

Pick amazon if possible, they have it for the same price.

Damn, didn't even know this was out yet. I'd wait for the review on dpreview before trying it. The improvements seem to be only minor stuff over the S3 on the press release. Main diffs are larger sensor and higher ISO and a larger screen. And the external flash hot shoe :D Considering the drop in the price of the S3, if u don't need those features, u should look at the S3. Or even the S2.

U might also wanna looks at the Sony H9 or the F828, if the price on that has come down. They have a funky night infra-red mode. Tho Sony's don't have the most reliable reps.

machan dpreview is a very nice site,

and dnt u think we should open a new tread for Digital Cameras ?

I think I'll hang onto it :D for one thing, SLRs are too cumbersome and complicated for everything, need a auto point and shoot sometimes, and for another thing, its devalued so far I don't wanna sell it for sooo much less than the price I got it. Devaluation around 20k.

Besides, I'll need the zoom. To get that zoom on an SLR u need a real pricey lens, probably 80-100k for the lens alone.

Hi MRM,

The viable option is to buy it from Ebay and then have the seller post or courier it to a shipping agent would ship it to you in SL,

Mrs Ashoka Wijesinghe Managing Director

Trico International Shipping Ltd

Unit D 001, Building D

Business Center at Wood Green

Clarendon Road ,

London N22 6XJ

Tel: 004 208 888 8787

Fax: 0044 208 889 5445

thats just some info I pulled off the net for a friend of mine, and she found them very helpful, and arranged to ship some items for her, and she posted the items to them, as she lives far from London,

you could call their Colombo office to get more info on costs

there are a few other agents in London who specialise in shipping to Colombo and I will try to dig up some more info, but I think its the most viable method of transport to SL for such a large item

they dont ship items to SL.

Amazon's orders are 'fulfilled' by various other companies and some offer postage to Sri Lanka, but it's only through Express/insured so it's expensive. Register with Aramex if you're keen on buying stuff online (especially items located in the US).

For amazon try kapruka global shop. I think what happens is you shop through their account and the items get shipped to their warehouse and they bulk ship them to Sri Lanka. If I remember right, they charge something like 5% of the order value for shipping. Sounded pretty decent to me.

Amazon ships a lot of stuff to SL. Just not electronics and auto parts, if that's what WCW was looking at.

Yes, I thought of some electronic parts! :sad-smiley-050:

As noted above, a couple of commercial shipping options available from US to Sri Lanka (Kapruka/Aramex). A lot of us know someone (maybe who knows someone//) who's coming back from US for holiday, break from work, office trip etc and that's how I bring a lot of stuff down.

IMO, can be done. Customs will throw away the valuation sent by the shipper. Make their own valuation. And those boys have ways ofnfindingnout exactly what it's worth. And then tax you 44% of that.

If you can grease palms, or better, find a customs agent, then he will do the greasing for youandn bring it home. I use my dads agent, let me inquire if he's willing to whore himself for my friends. Have to get dads approval also. If green lights are given, I'll put you in touch withy him.

The way I see it, you get what you want, he gets money, and it's a win win.

He usually greases the customs about 2500/- flat fee for whatever I bring down. And I brought down a TON of stuff. Brakes, exhaust, electronics. Electricals, you name it, I've brought it.
