Tuning And Timing?

Guys, this question may seems like simple. But appreciate if someone can provide me a clear answers.

What exactly are the things that should do when tuning an EFI engine?

What is the difference between tuning and timing? (or are they the same thing)

This wont be a comprehensive list but I guess a tune up would include the following:

Checking and changing spark plugs

Checking and cleaning the sensors

Cleaning of throttle body etc

Checking and clearing errors on the ecu

Filters

Its basically doing a check of everything and giving it a good clean.

Tuning and Timing are two things. With timing you get the ignition timing and the valve timing (controlled by the timing belt or chain)

Valve timing controls the timing of the valve. when they open with the movement of the pistons to let air in and exhaust out. This doesnt not need to be adjusted. Some engines have Variable Valve Timing. In such an engine, the ECU controls the time in the engine cycle at which the valves open. The valves are usually opened sooner at higher speed than at lower speed. This can optimize the flow of air into the cylinder, increasing power and economy

Ignition Timing is what controls when the spark happens in the engine relative to the piston position. This is usually adjusted throughout the engine RPM range by the ECU to maximise efficiency and power. The ECU data controls when this happens and is stored in a timing map which is a table with engine speed on one axis and engine load on the other axis. So depending on what load and speed the engine is doing the reading is taken off this table.

Hope this helps

Hi Guys

Yes

He is bit talking about never technologies, when it comes to the OLD clasicsin tuneup you may include the Carburetor cleaning and tuneup with changing slow fast jet etc , when it comes to timing that is bit of a hell , becs old clasic uses manual setup timing where you start with crank pulley and based on TDC and BTDC ignition timing with distributer installation etc will come into play , then for smoothing advance and retard timing, it is not so easy when you mess up u get fedup wih.

Thanks

Thanks for the information guys, Is it necessary to check timing through ECU data in regular intervals? Are there professionals in SL to do this kind of job?

(I ride a Nissan FB 15)

Hi,

If you are referring to ignition timing then you do not need to check this as the ECU data wouldn’t really change. Most cars have the engine maps stored in the ECU and they do not change (some even cannot be changed). There are newer cars where you get programmable ECU and you can modify the maps for performance etc. Also on some new models there is a thing called a learning ECU where the ECU has a set of base maps stored but it then 'learns' and tweaks these setting to achieve the best performance depending on your driving style. So a car that is regularly floored and one that is driven very smoothly will have slightly different setting because the ECU changes the settings accordingly.

By the way I don't know what sort of ECU comes on a FB15. Im guessing it could be a non programmable one. Just a guess.
