Ruined Bmw E28

Schiffer

Recommended Posts

Basically to get this car back as a BM, the best would be to find a complete E28, dismantle it and reassemble it combining the two cars. Actually it would make an interesting prospect if someone can find an M535i or, dare I say it an M5 ;)

A lot of work but far from impossible. If only I had one less project on my hands..........

That's what I was thinking myself... a quick search turned up plenty of likely candidates in the Uk...

or http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C361027

are the closest to original spec and they have the all important Manual box as well. Price isn't too bad either.

and http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C367339 Are more expensive but a corresponding step up since they are 535is and the second one is an M535!

and finally we have the cost no object option, Not an M5 (those are madly priced now) but just as good..

Supra, how much of such a car can you genuinely bring down legally to transplant parts to?

As far as i'm aware, everything apart from the unibody can be brought down as parts. If one of the elusive "body permits" could be found then the whole thing could be brought down I suppose but since the existing car has an intact unibody, just the panels and the mechanicals/interior are what is needed.

A friend once tried to do the same and the costs were estimated around

£1000- £1500 labour for dismantling and disposal of original minus the parts you need

£750-£1000 for freight plus whatever charges at Colombo port

To this you need to add the acquisition cost of the donor car and if its not derivable delivery for dismantlement.

Is there a way that such a car can be imported so in the agreement that a similar type of car will be removed from the road.

Same model same options same yom etc.... an unusable condition (very economical diesel converted :D ) one for good one.

I think such a law will be valuable for both the government and the people

Yup, the problem with the UK, well, actually most countries now, will be the labour rates for dismantling. Best thing may be if you have a friend who's handy with a spanner and hammer based in UK to help, but its still a messy job. I remember hearing how Milroy bought and then drove I think 5 complete cars from UK to Germany in about a week or so, just so they could be dismantled and shipped here at a cheaper rate.

precisely Komi

as I said I have the utmost respect for docs (well, perhaps bar a few money hounds who don't care about patients)for the reasons I mentioned before. Then again I may be a bit biassed as my sis is a doc too. But seeing her struggle to make a work-life balance everyday I thank god that I chose a different career path.

Now as for being a petrol head, there are people in all sorts of professions who couldn't care less about their cars. I've seen many engineers for example whose rides are a complete disgrace.

So being a petrol head is definitely a way of life. And of course if you were not born with a silver spoon in your mouth, by the time you make enough money to buy an exotic ride, to expand what Komi said:

(1)you cant't buy that Porsche because you've gotta make room for a wife and a couple of child seats and a pram in your ride

(2) a few years down the line your kids are grown up, don't wanna ride with the old man any more, so you can buy the Porsche but your 18 year old son steals the keys goes hoon around town

(3) once in a blue moon you get to drive it, only to find out that your reflexes have grown slow with age and you're struggling to keep the frikkin thing on the damn road.

That's life :(

Well you can. You just have to buy a Porsche Cayenne ;) Which is I guess why the Cayenne is so popular; but then again I've seen Porsches 911's with child seats in the back...

guess you could. But a Cayenne or even a Panamera is not necesarily "buying a Posrche" as inferred by a 911 or even a Boxter. Think of "Porsche" as a metaphor for that fast, flashy, expensive, highly-un-practical-for-daily-use sports car all of us blokes would like to buy one day, which screams "big boy's toy" and that you've made it in life (or perhaps mid-life crisis). It could be a Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, Pagani Zonda, Koenigsegg, Gumpert or even a Veyron for that matter.

Buying a Cayenne perhaps only advertizes that life did not go exactly as planned for you and you cannot afford to buy a fleet of vehicles which serves different purposes. So does having child seats in the back of your 911 I guess.

Doesn't that just mean you're a cool dad / mom who gives the kids a fun ride once in a while?

he he. guess it does if you also have a big Merc / Audi / BMW / Volvo SUV to haul the kids around regularly and a ride in the Porsche is for fun once in a while.

I've seen a few parents who cramp their kids in the back of sports cars on a regular basis when doing the school run and shopping, etc, because that's the only car they have - I'd say that's suffering from a serious identity crisis.

Hi All,

Saw the beast parked in KCC Car Park and was indeed a very sad sight. It was worse though to find an admirer of the thing, a van driver who was parked near by saw me having a look at it and told me 'Niyama BMW eka' (a great BMW). Before I started telling him the story he said that this model looks better than those 4 light models so decided to keep the mouth shut. :speechless-smiley-004:

Even when I came back to the car park the car was there so hanged around to see if I could meet the owner but didn't get a chance. Now that there's only a slim chance of this getting a rebirth at least lets wish it a dignified & fast death.

Cheers

K9M
