BTW I know a Gynecologist who has brand new latest models of all these vehicles parked at his home.

BMW 7 Series, Merc S class, LC Prado, LC 200, Hilux, Hiace Commuter, Defender 110, Tipper Truck and possibly a three-wheeler too. :)

Apart from Jaliya's suggestions....Presuming you don't want the run of the mill KE20/30/50, Sunny B31x/21x, sedan...

Although the Sunny hatchbacks are quite desirable....<well the ones without the 5min bolt on body kits by you know who...>

60s and 70s Carina, Corona/Corona Mark II... or the same from the 70s and early 80s along with Cressida, Crown and Corolla KE70 sedan (the Corolla AE80 sedan from the 80s..is somewhat interesting?) could be options ?

Not to mention the Nissan Violet/Bluebird (710 ?) from the 70s...or the 910 from the 80s

Ooh and the Mazda 1500/1800 (a.k.a Luce/Upali Mazda...) are nice too...I personally thought the euro design of the car was a lot sexier than the "I want to look like a huge american gas guzzler" look of some of the other Japanese cars of the period.

unfortunately most of the Jap cars I have seen from the 70s have been molested with non-spec lights and body panels and petrol-diesel conversions etc...(probably due to lack of parts and/or owners not caring a rat's-rear-end) or are in dire need of significant work...

Good recommendations, iRage! Another is the Nissan RZ1, which looks a lot like an AE86 Levin. I've seen one or two pop up on the classifieds, so I'll keep you informed if I come across one.

And then there's the Mitsubishi Celeste.

IMHO the RZ1 is nothing special, it's FWD and is essentially a trad sunny underneath... Its an equally dull drive in standard form, although there were one or two turbo engined cars that MIGHT have been a bit more fun (never driven one of those). So other than the 80's sci-fi looks and the digital dash, not very interesting.

The Celeste at least, is rear wheel drive...

Too bad this guy haven't got time to enjoy any of it.

There are a couple of Trueno's advertised recently. One is a fully modified one on the classifieds here. The other one is a more desirable body shape, but it seems stock on another site. On a mission to get my wife to go along now.... :)

Waiting for the owner of the modified one to comeback to SL to go have it looked at by dad and bro :)...the hatchback looks stock and expensive too

They are more or less the same price. But I guess comparing the mods gone into the coupe, I guess his asking price makes it more desirable.

Yes that is why I said the hatch back is expensive comparatively....and considering the work the hatch would need he better be willing to go down on the price somewhat...

WHAT? The RZ1 is FF? Who'd have thunk?!

I'm fond of the Celeste myself, but I've rarely seen the early model with the chrome bumpers here. The later model with the steel bumpers are common though.

Yes he's one of the best and like a god to some people. He's the most organized person I've ever seen and his usage of lot of electronic gadgets/devices to make his work efficient is amazing.

... and now we are discussing gynaecologists :)

Well, the OP started off with having trouble convincing the wife... and the wife would goto a gyna.... So in a way we circled back to the starting point.

Maybe the OP should take his wife to this particular doc.. and during the check up he could do the OP a favour and drop a hint about how nice it is to have multiple cars :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok. So I got another ride. It's a Toyota Corolla KE 50 lift back. It was circling on some FB groups for the past few weeks. I went and had a look and have an offer. It finally came at my price so I got it. It isn't perfect (who would expect 35 year old car to be?)

So it has got a lot more rust than the photos show you, and a few more quirks to work out. Like the car doesn't start with the key sometimes and you have to short a wire on the engine bay to get the starter motor running, wheels rubbing against wheel wells at a full turn, lights, wipers.

But it will be interesting to get it back in shape.

So hopefully for me, I think I've reached my limit, at least for a while.

we had 8 cars and 10 bikes in our household and my brother moved with his toys and my dad dad reduced his . i am reducing my collection as well since i tend to spend money on buying cars/ motorcycle and spend money maintaining them. when it gets to a point it gets too much of a stress and takes the fun out of it. when you have too many projects you cant finish any.

I would love to buy an old classic car and restore it but I lack the time. Even if I am to buy a proper one I don't think I will have the time to maintain it because you can't rely on someone else to maintain a classin. It needs personal attention. But I do hope of buying one within the next 3 years. Hopefully a Triumph or the Classic Mini.

Yup that's the one. It's rusted a lot more than can be seen on the pics.

So I am contemplating which one to take to a tinker first. the Corolla or the Escort. From what I can see the Escort is in better nick than the Corolla. Decisions....

OT:

I have observed that when I do an image search on most of these 60s-80s vehicles based on the model name (fr example, KE50); about 80% of the images that show up are of vehicles in Sri Lanka.. and no, I dont think it can be location based, cos I'm not based in Sri Lanka.
