Few boys who were playing started to shout at him. Then called that area as (KOLLANGE PITYA) Later that was named Kollupitiya.

Nice story Sylvi, but this is what Wikipedia says about how the name came into being:

The name Kollupitiya comes from the name of a chief from Kandy who had unsuccessfully attempted to dethrone the last king of Kandy

True, I have heard the story on Wikipedia about Kollupitiya before, and thought it was true. The below Sunday Observer article proves that Wikipedia is correct. :)

Take the name 'Kollupitiya'. How many of us know for instance that 'Kollupitiya' traces its name to a rebellion that took place in Kandy in the late seventeenth century?, And that it was named after a Kandyan chief who had unsuccessfully sought to de-throne the last king of Kandy?

Internet gives various versions. What on my post is a true story.

Barandeniya is Kollupitiya Junction near Police Station.

Above Area was named Stuart Place. Kollupitiya to Bambalapitiya was named Arnolda Place.During British era.

Guys.. I'm talking about everyday general people who use cars for daily commuting and most of the general usage.. my example was bulk of mainstream manufacturers will move into hybrid systems sooner than later and it will not take another 50 yrs to do that. And the demand for that will increase with mainstream customers.

you are only speaking about the the opinions of Car enthusiasts who love driving manuals.. thats a different story..

Who says everyone needs to jump to hybrids?? you got it all wrong my friend. I'm saying expect more hybrids models coming to the market NOT you need to buy one

You got it wrong junior....why do I / others at AL need to give a rat's ass for what u expect? Keep your expectations for your self. Either quote from a reliable / independant source or convince us of your credentials as an automobile technology researcher. Other wise i see your statement as pure blabber.

Members,

Forget “ANDARE” he lived did a part his name already in our history.Revert back to Hybrids.

Few months back Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman’s Prediction in USA.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada predicted that hybrid vehicles will play a larger role in the future development of automotive propulsion systems than widely recognized.

Uchiyamada, in remarks before the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., said that hybrids retain key advantages that will continue to make them popular with consumers. “Some people say hybrid vehicles such as the Prius are only a bridge to the future. But we think it could be a long bridge and a very sturdy one,” Uchiyamada said. “There are many more gains we can achieve with hybrids.”

Toyota is working on the fourth generation of the Prius. “In each of the previous moves to a new generation, we achieved a 10 percent increase in mileage per gallon,” Uchiyamada said. “We are committed to beating that record this time.”

Toyota offers more types of hybrids than any other manufacturer. As of March, it had sold 5 million hybrid vehicles around the world. And the Prius alone hit a cumulative level of 3 million sales globally in June.

But the auto industry will need to strive even harder to achieve ambitious mileage standards established by the Obama Administration. “Today I wish to call on the industry to sell 5 million hybrids in the U.S. by the end of 2016,” Uchiyamada said. “It’s only when we put ourselves under the same kind of intense pressure we faced in developing the Prius that we can achieve great goals. That’s what it takes. I want our industry to achieve this goal.”

Over the longer term, Uchiyamada said he was particularly excited by a new hydrogen fuel cell vehicle the company is developing, which will have zero tail pipe emissions. Without the issues of driving range and charging time that electric vehicles have, “I personally expect a lot from this hydrogen fuel cell technology,” he said. “Perhaps 15 years from now, we can meet again here in Washington and we will know exactly which system has prevailed,” he added.

In other remarks, Uchiyamada said:

--Some manufacturers are announcing vehicles that will be completely autonomous but Toyota believes new technologies, such as sensors that can apply brakes or control steering, should be added carefully and in stages. Toyota embraces the goal of zero highway fatalities but believes drivers may need to remain in control of their vehicles for the foreseeable future.

--More industry-government cooperation is necessary to allow the creation of Intelligent Transportation Systems in which cars can communicate with each other and with the transportation infrastructure to prevent accidents, ease congestion and reduce emissions.

Uchiyamada became chairman earlier this year, succeeding Fujio Cho.

Sylvi's story about the etymology of Kollupitiya seems to be true after all!

Everything seems to fit in.

Andare, who had a habit of defecating in public, was copped one day and taken to the police station. There, he developed a sudden urge to take a shit.. that's why the place is called Barandeniya (from Kakka-Bara). Then he ran off to Sylvi's house in Sea Avenue, which didn't have a loo, ran off the back door to the sands and relieved himself, while some kids made fun of him (thus the name KOLLU-pitiya was born).

Story fits in perfectly.

Look where that kind of thinking led Toyota. They didn't come up with an intersting car up until the GT86 since the Supra. The void filled with a sea of bland cars. And people had to watch nails grow until they finally let the LFA out. Even then it's more of a specialty.

Just to be clear, I'm not hating on Toyota..Their success as a commercial entity is undeniable and aquas and prius serve their intended purpose rather well on their own right. Just that those aren't the reasons we love an auto manufacturer. And Toyota kind of lost that place in our hearts by putting all their eggs in the hybrid basket.

Correction! No. I was not born at that time.

My great grandfather’s house was not next to Sea Avenue. That was belongs to grandfather of Girty fonseka.

My great grandfather’s house was at 410 Galle road Kollupitiya. Now Lalsons tailors are having a business.

This road hogging is not an exclusive Hybrid issue. Car's like the Prius are quite big and some less than capable drivers seem to drive in the middle of the road thanks to their inability to deal with the size of the car or judge the size (possibly lack of visual perspective). Lady drivers seem to suffer from it more (even my ex had a bad habit of driving in the middle of 2 lane roads, and when I pointed it out I just got grief :))

MD, that 's a valid explanation to the middle of the road, 30kmph road hogs!

I wonder why don't they buy a Tata nano (a manageable sized car), deposit the savings in an FD and pump fuel from the interest. Easier to drive, fuel bill settled, and most of all... the rest of the road users are free from the misery they otherwise cause.

Well said Hoonigan! Sums up the impression of petrol heads towards what was once a promising automaker!
