Allion A15 Or A18 ?

Sonariz

Question

I am planing to buy (import) Allion 2014,

As I noticed, almost all Allions (2011-2014) which available in SL roads are A15 (1500 CC)

Only few A18 Allions are available, and most of them are 2007 or 2008. (Mean no newer A18 Allions)

As Toyota.jp spec shows A15 does around 19km/l and A18 does around 16km/l

But Still I would like to go with A18 which expects me to give more driving pleasure than A15.

So guys, Why A18 is not much available in SL market? Is there any specific reasons?

Also I noticed that Japanese auction site jpcenter.ru also have few 2014 A18 allions and number is very low compared to the number of A15 Allions in auction.

Just give me your thoughts.....

Best Regards !!

Yes...the false myth that engines larger than 1500cc is a gas guzzling tank and is the death of their wallet and oil reserves of the planet NO MATTER WHAT is to blame for that. Depending on how and what you use your car for an 1800cc engine has potential to be more efficient than a 1500cc engine.

Why do you see more A15s than A18s? The simple explanation is most of the brand new Premios/Allions you see on auction are cars that were specifically ordered by car exporters in Japan for export. What seems to be more desirable for markets like SL are the likes of the A15 (because of the above mentality). That added with the actual number of A15s you get from actual cars used by Japanese you get more A15s than A18s.

In Japan from what I have seen there is almost the same of both and I would say what you see most of depends on the area and user segment. In Nagasaki and surrounding areas where traffic is not that bad and is full of mountains you see a lot more larger engined cars than the city areas. So I would reckon there would be a preference for the A18 over A15 in such areas. Also, I have noticed that Allions and Axios are popular sales person cars (they seem to be having a field day with the Axio/Felder Hybrid). So again considering the high amount of highway miles they do again they might prefer the A18 over the A15. Where families are concerned cars like the Allion are left at home for the most part and public transport or smaller kei cars are used for daily commutes to work, etc...so I guess if you are not going to use it that much or going to sit in traffic for a better part of the day it makes more sense to buy the A15 ? ...There is nothing scientific about what I said...just comments based on observation. The A20 on the hand is extremely harder to find even in Japan. This also leads to another reason why you see more A15s than A18s when searching to import to SL.

If most of the A18s are owned by companies they would have their own disposal cycles so you may not see them ALL of the time. When you factor in the 2 year age restriction for Sri Lankan imports I am pretty certain most of these company owned cars would get filtered OUT. This is also complemented by the fact that with the whole economic crunch/changes most average japanese people now hold on to their cars for longer periods.

If I were you I would go for the A18 in a heartbeat. I own a A15 and mostly drive long distance, while the acceleration is somewhat reasonable for a large car like that but I think the A18 would do much much better and you will feel that improved driving pleasure. I have read on wikipedia the 2010+ A18 has the Valvematic 2ZR-FAE and an improved CVT so it should do better on fuel than the 2007/08 models. But like iRage said, if you plan to run only short distance the A15 would make more sense.

Family owns a 1800CC Premio, for long trips it's better on juice than it's 1500CC counterpart. and it's pretty nippy when it's come to overtaking and all.

ps: it's quite sad that Toyota dropped the Performance Versions of these cars after Carina GT / Corolla GT. saw one Corolla Runx which powered by a 2ZZ-GE (replacement of the 4A-GE) engine and going for Dirt cheap.

When overtaking I sometimes wish I had a A18, on the A15 when I accelerate hard the engine makes this "raan roan" sound, though the acceleration doesnt live up to it. I dont know if this is the case with all A15s or just my car, cuz my one has this problem with the plugs and tuneup. Changing the gear to S helps to make a sudden acceleration boost though.

Is yours a NZT260 or NZT240? my cousin's NZT260 Premio also makes quite a lot of noise when you rev the engine hard but the actual acceleration does not match the noise made.

I noticed that you have posted the same question in Ela*kir*.com. from the answers given there you can have a basic idea how the typical sri lankan market behaves . most of the people have advised not to go for the A18 without giving a proper explanation and simply followed the herding instinct.

ohhhhhh that should be interesting... care to share a link? :D

Its a 2007 NZT260 machan. So its probably normal with all those 1500cc engines? But I cant remember my cousins axio making such a noice.

Yeah I was going to ask for that. Searched in google and found some other hilarious threads on elakiri regarding Allions and Premios, but not this. Btw its soo hard to read and understand some singlish gibberish comments posted on those threads, it made my head spin.

Maybe thats cuz the Axio weighs less, so less burden on the engine :)
