Which Nano Coating should I go

Hello guys,

I thought to have a nano coating for my vehicle and I found two major installers here in sri lanka. C**mic P*o and Na** T**f. is there anyone who had any of these services ? Would like to know your thoughts

Do they actually work??

Is it only worth the cost and effort when applied on flawless brand new car paint work?

 

Do these coatings have a life span?

Does it deteriorate based on the number of wash cycles or the strength or characteristics of the cleaning products used

 

What effect does it have if say someone has to touch up the paint work?

 

There was a place in Kohuwala that offered something called a "Polymimetic Coating" - is that a real thing/specialised technology or just some creative marketing speak? ?

I suggest you do some research online before you commit, to see if it is the right product for you. There are some nice articles and videos comparing ceramic coating, paint protection films and waxing. Don't believe the sales talk. These are not invincible. It will protect against swirl marks and slight abrasions and buy some time for you to clean bird droppings before they etch the paint. It will not prevent damage from stone chips, tuktuks and motorcycles scratching your paint when squeezing through. The paint protection films are better at these. Furthermore, if you have to touch up the paint, you will have to buff the ceramic coat away to do the repair and ceramic coaters will not be keen to touch up a single panel later. If you have a very valuable car or a recently restored classic it will be able to justify the cost. For most normal cars used on a daily basis with an owner who has time to wash it regularly according to the proper technique, a good quality wax or paint sealant will do.

Only advantage i can think of is bird droppings and oxidization. Other vise a good wax will give a better look and dust and water protection and peace of mind not having to worry about your expensive ceramic coating.

Well...Ceramic coatings do give you a bit of a time lapse in cleaning the car of bird droppings, mud, swirls etc...

Coatings do have a life span...it depends on the type of coating and the layers that are put on. Each layer is of a different compound. After you coat it you cannot apply wax or polish or anything (obviously) and most ceramic coatings recommend you wash it with just water. Mainly because for the coating to stay on you need to use a coating friendly shampoo and those things are not easy to come by and nor are they cheap.

Yes...if the paint is already spoilt then you would still need to do a proper paint correction before you put the coating on (you could just lay it on). Then when you take it in for coating they will take off the wax and stuff and lay on the coating.

Also, if your paint is already faded, cracked, chipped, then coating would probably be a waste.

I did a coating on the Corolla Wagon in Japan when I had to leave it with my in-laws for long periods of time where it would not have gotten waxed or properly cleaned. The coating did do a reasonable job in keeping the paint clear for one year. I then started using Maguiar's wash and wax and it was noticeable how the coating started to deteriorate. Once it started deteriorating I did not attend to is so it started leaving weird rashes on the bonnet and hood and even eventually had to be resprayed.  What the paint guy said was that with the coating slightly cracked in certain places impurities would have crept between the pain the the coating and eventually the paint started to crack out. So...coatings are not as easy as you think it is and requires some diligent looking after. 

Even in Sri Lanka two of my detailing buddies have gotten quite a few cars for detailing and paint correction after the ceramic coating was improperly applied and pretty much left weird things on the surface.

I too would recommend you save the money...get a good detailing job done using good material..then invest in a good wax (apply and spray type) and maybe even  a buffing machine and then wax it once every 6-8 months (or even more depending on the wax you use). It will give the same protection against bird poop as the coating would.

Generally thanks guys for your honest replies. after seeing all those and going through the net I also thought it will be better to get done a proper polish and wax and then get some PPF protection over specific parts

Personally i would stay with good ol Waxing (Stick to good brand like Meguirs). As iRage mentioned above it would be a mess once it started to show its age and start deteriorate.

Yes, that would be your home. With the right tools and products You can properly do it yourself.

Ok I will tell you from my experience. I usually wax my car once a month after prepping. I use Autoglym Rapid aqua wax which will blend in with water so I do not have to completely dry the car after washing. in my case I use two non-stretching microfiber cloths only. Steps are as follows.

Wash the car and leave wet

Spray the wax while the car is still sitting with water (2 sprays per panel is sufficient)

Use a clean microfiber cloth to spread the wax. 

Buff to shine with the 2nd microfiber cloth.

Talk to @Octanehead or ODG..they will do a complete restoration of the paint and interior (to an extent where they literally will clean the nuts and rails the seat is laying on. After that....get a good wax (they can recommend you one based onthe product they use). Some products that are good are Maguiars, AutoGlym, Chemical Bros. Soft99 (not the cheap Chinese crap bu the actual Japanese market ones).

Yup Charith & Oshan are good ?

Even a place like Doctor Auto will do the needful - they carry most of the brands @iRage mentioned but you need to tell them what you want and the prices will vary marginally accordingly

Talking about Detailing, Recently Kleen*** quoted 27k for My Brothers IST 2007? ? thats of course for the full detailing job.
