Triumph T R Restore Project

The original colour stated on the reg book is Signal red GTAm.We found traces of of red when we were removing the rust,...As for the final colour I've decided on Bianco Fuji pearl white.please refer the linked post for more details. http://forum.autolan...160#entry218337

I have decided to keep the original 15" steel rims...

Because:-

A.I can't afford new wire wheels.

B.The spare wire wheel set I have is gold coloured and vulgar.

C.I actually think the original wheels look better on this car.

Refurbishing the wheels is a very easy job.But first of all check all the rims for wobbles and un-even edges.there are lots of places that'll sort these out for you.There is a place near the GIG building at Panchi that have been there for decades and I heard Amila at Dehiwala also provides this service.If the wheel edges are severely disfigured they can even bud the 'base plate' of the original rim to a donor wheel.This comes very handy if the original wheels have a distinctive pattern or style like mine.Sadly I do not have a fifth wheel of the same same pettern to use as a spare so I'll be using a wheel from one of the other cars with the same PCD.

So once that is sorted remove the rust and paint from the wheels.You know the drill.angle grinders,rust and paint removers etc etc.Smooth out the inside surface of the wheel so the tube doesn't get cut.Apply a coat of primer then filler.Now chances are that on a 60 year old car the wheel surface(on the side) that's visible to the outside will have blemish and scuff marks.Fill these with filler putty and smooth it out with water sand paper.I've applied plain jet black for now untill decide the final colour.It will most probably be white or gun metal grey.

Read my mind GTAm!It has become some what a cliche that every old car has to have wire wheels no.Plus if you order from places like Moss they always send this generic set of rims for every brand and model.but if you hunt in the scrap yards you can find some awesome designs like the one on me MG A.

Anyway below is sort of how wheels will look like in the end.It should look quite decent with a clear coat and the hubcaps buffed up.

No I don't have everything brought down.For this Triumph I only got the piston and liner set,a speedometer drive,pair of front shock absorbers,carb items,new valve cover and some small body trim items like locks.The car had all the other major components with it despite the condition so it was only a matter of repairing or refurbishing them.,..Sure some compatible mechanical parts can still be found in the wattes and some places across the island But it is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive.As for body and trim bits it is almost useless searching for here in SL.

Can't believe I missed out on this thread for so long, so just went through it from page 1. Amazing work MD, Can't wait to see its completion. Its hard not to be motivated to go out and buy a classic when you see things like this, but alas, these things require financing, not to mention a hell of a lot of commitment. I guess its better to do a job properly than not at all. Perhaps some day though

There's a vintage sports car(I'm guessing a late model Spitfire, but not sure) somewhere close to where I live. The owner has it covered up but it's too far gone to restore. (I think). I'll snap a photo covertly later on.

Well the CCC Magasthota climb is what I have in mind. If not next year then definitely 2014.Should be quite competitive this car.Paddy Hopkirk led four TRs to a top 4 whitewash in the Alpine Rally and there is some moderate success at Sebring and Le Mans 24Hr aswell(5th overall I think).

Have you seen Gtams "restoration from hell" thread? After that car, NOTHING is beyond restoration! Spitfires especially are pretty simple cars to work on and you can get all the parts somewhere or the other.... Do snap a pic sometime machan, would love to see what it is...

2014 sounds like a plan for sure - If you bring the TR, i'll keep you company in the RS ....don't see myself being able to get funds for a roll cage++++ by this coming April
